Since intimate partner violence is framed within the global issue of violence against women, it is shaped and supported by societal, familial, and cultural norms and is complicated by the intersection of other cultural oppressions. Today, House of Ruth Maryland is recognized as one of the nation’s most comprehensive domestic violence centers and has a staff of more than ninety. Our voluntary leadership consists of a thirty-member Board of Directors and an Advisory Committee. Case Managers will provide a wide array of referral services for women with children that qualify. During this phase, we work intensively in partnership with each woman to assist her in securing income and housing. Also, we support women in utilizing the shelter’s rich offering of tools and services to work through trauma, begin to plan for self-sufficiency, and expand her capacity to grow through involvement in enrichment and wellness programs. Our services include enriched housing for families and single women, trauma-informed child development, and free counseling to anyone, regardless of gender, who is a survivor of trauma and abuse. For over 40 years, House of Ruth has provided safe and stable housing to women, children and families in the DC area who have experienced houselessness and abuse. House of Ruth Maryland is one of the nation’s leading intimate partner violence centers, helping thousands of battered women and their children find the safety and security that so many of us take for granted.

House of Ruth celebrates 40 years of service to the women, children and families in the D.C. Kidspace is rated a “High Quality” child development center (the highest rating available) by D.C.’s Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE). House of Ruth’s President & CEO, Sandra L. Jackson, D. Min., M.S.W., LICSW, LCSW-C, is awarded Georgetown University’s 2020 “John Thompson Jr. Legacy of a Dream Award” for her outstanding leadership, particularly in regards to her vision for House of Ruth’s new Kidspace child and family development center in Ward 7. House of Ruth is dedicated to preventing domestic violence and ensuring the safety and well-being of those impacted by it.
Counseling:
All of these services are offered in House of Ruth’s homes for families. Families living in rent-subsidized apartments get supportive services from House of Ruth through the Bridges Program and FamilySpace. Altogether, more than 110 families are cared for annually at House of Ruth.

Without a home the only thing you’d be thinking about is finding a home. Women and children provided with safe and stable housing through our 13 housing programs. We are here to help survivors of domestic violence and houselessness.
The Domestic Violence Support Center
When a family moves on to permanent housing, we assist in securing mental health support close to where they are living. As years went, on we came to understand the variety of needs accompanying houselessness and domestic violence. Today, we operate 15 programs across the District of Columbia, including housing, counseling, and child development services. Our 84-bed shelter is a safe, supportive, temporary refuge for victims of intimate partner violence and their children who are in immediate danger or at risk of homicide. We help women living in shelter begin recovery from the trauma of their partner’s violence and to rebuild their lives.

Counselors are trained in crisis intervention, safety planning, counseling and legal referrals, and pro-active advocacy to victims, as well as their families, friends, and the community in general. Trained staff is present around the clock to ensure that residents are safe and receive the support they need. At 13 locations in Washington, D.C., House of Ruth serves women, children, and families who are striving to overcome childhood trauma, domestic violence, homelessness, mental health disorders, and substance abuse. House of Ruth provides nurturing, structured, safe housing and caring, consistent, individualized services in order to capitalize on the participants' strengths and meet their specific needs.
House of Ruth Maryland’s shelter is a safe place where battered women and their children live as a community dedicated to non-violence. Residents work together to keep space clean and healthy; they are assisted by housekeeping staff. The shelter is drug and alcohol free and battered women who have had substance abuse or mental health problems must be in treatment while living in shelter. Residents, staff and volunteers are equally committed to keeping the shelter location confidential to protect everyone there. School-age children attend school; some others are enrolled in childcare.
Dr. Veronica Maz was a Georgetown University professor when she founded House of Ruth. She realized that, while there were shelters for men in D.C., there were no shelters for women at the time. She went on to found not only House of Ruth, but Martha’s Table and SOME (So Others Might Eat).
An individualized plan is developed with each person focusing on their immediate safety, mental health and addressing related issues. This plan then serves as a reference point for monitoring progress. Our therapists help participants gain access to critical resources for housing, employment, education and training, child care, legal issues, budgeting, safety planning, and more. We work to empower women by providing safe housing and access to the knowledge and resources they need to find their path toward independence. Our programs are designed to meet each participant where they are and develop an individualized plan so that they can reach their goals and support themselves and their families. Martha‘s Table is a local nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C., with a mission to support strong children, strong families, and strong communities.
House of Ruth offers comprehensive services and housing for women and children. Our services range from supportive housing for families and single women in crisis, to a therapeutic child and family development center, and free counseling services to anyone who has experienced domestic violence. Your gift helps to ensure critical resources like safe housing, mental health care and childcare are available to survivors of houselessness and domestic violence here in DC. Therapists work in partnership with the health clinic and our wellness program to make sure that woman and children receive the support, counseling, and nurturing that they need. Los Angeles House of Ruth provides services for Homeless Women with Children. Beyond serving families in our housing program, an additional 500 people a year (minimum) are provided with referrals for food, medical help, shelter, and other crisis services. The mission of the Los Angeles House of Ruth is to provide temporary and transitional shelter and supportive services for homeless battered women and their children. House of Ruth’s Domestic Violence Support Center (DVSC) provides crucial counseling services to those who have experienced or are currently experiencing domestic violence or intimate partner violence.
Martha‘s Table exists because every child, regardless of zip code, should have the opportunity to thrive. For over 40 years, the organization has been working to increase access to quality education, health and wellness resources, and family supports. The length of time a woman or family can live in shelter is based upon her individual needs and goals. We encourage battered women to use time at the beginning of their stay as respite, rest and sanctuary. This is the time that battered women use to look back and forward and to decide the best next course of action. Women who choose to remain in shelter beyond this period will enter the “short-term transitional” phase of the program.
Staff is on-site around the clock to assist the women and ensure their safety while creating a warm, nurturing environment. LAHR provides onsite individual and group counseling for children and their parents as additional support. Our mental health staff includes therapists who specialize in Cognitive Behavioral Treatment, which is successful in assisting the client in changing behaviors. Our child therapists specialize in children’s mental health issues, which the children in our shelters desperately need. When a family has mental health needs beyond our available staffing time, we refer the family to agencies that specialize in mental health treatment.
Legal services, including advocacy, representation and assistance with immigration issues are available shelter residents through our legal clinic. Many of the mothers at House of Ruth are not yet prepared for employment that will allow them to fully support their families. Our staff actively links them to education and training that will lead to a family-sustaining wage.
