Dr. Veronica Maz was a Georgetown University professor when she founded House of Ruth. She realized that, while there were shelters for men in D.C., there were no shelters for women at the time. She went on to found not only House of Ruth, but Martha’s Table and SOME (So Others Might Eat).

An individualized plan is developed with each person focusing on their immediate safety, mental health and addressing related issues. This plan then serves as a reference point for monitoring progress. Our therapists help participants gain access to critical resources for housing, employment, education and training, child care, legal issues, budgeting, safety planning, and more. We work to empower women by providing safe housing and access to the knowledge and resources they need to find their path toward independence. Our programs are designed to meet each participant where they are and develop an individualized plan so that they can reach their goals and support themselves and their families. Martha‘s Table is a local nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C., with a mission to support strong children, strong families, and strong communities.

House of Ruth offers comprehensive services and housing for women and children. Our services range from supportive housing for families and single women in crisis, to a therapeutic child and family development center, and free counseling services to anyone who has experienced domestic violence. Join our community of donors and help us support women as they end the cycle of domestic violence.

Your gift helps to ensure critical resources like safe housing, mental health care and childcare are available to survivors of houselessness and domestic violence here in DC. Therapists work in partnership with the health clinic and our wellness program to make sure that woman and children receive the support, counseling, and nurturing that they need. Los Angeles House of Ruth provides services for Homeless Women with Children. Beyond serving families in our housing program, an additional 500 people a year (minimum) are provided with referrals for food, medical help, shelter, and other crisis services. The mission of the Los Angeles House of Ruth is to provide temporary and transitional shelter and supportive services for homeless battered women and their children. House of Ruth’s Domestic Violence Support Center (DVSC) provides crucial counseling services to those who have experienced or are currently experiencing domestic violence or intimate partner violence.

Martha‘s Table exists because every child, regardless of zip code, should have the opportunity to thrive. For over 40 years, the organization has been working to increase access to quality education, health and wellness resources, and family supports. The length of time a woman or family can live in shelter is based upon her individual needs and goals. We encourage battered women to use time at the beginning of their stay as respite, rest and sanctuary. This is the time that battered women use to look back and forward and to decide the best next course of action. Women who choose to remain in shelter beyond this period will enter the “short-term transitional” phase of the program.

Staff is on-site around the clock to assist the women and ensure their safety while creating a warm, nurturing environment. LAHR provides onsite individual and group counseling for children and their parents as additional support. Our mental health staff includes therapists who specialize in Cognitive Behavioral Treatment, which is successful in assisting the client in changing behaviors. Our child therapists specialize in children’s mental health issues, which the children in our shelters desperately need. When a family has mental health needs beyond our available staffing time, we refer the family to agencies that specialize in mental health treatment.

Legal services, including advocacy, representation and assistance with immigration issues are available shelter residents through our legal clinic. Many of the mothers at House of Ruth are not yet prepared for employment that will allow them to fully support their families. Our staff actively links them to education and training that will lead to a family-sustaining wage. Case-control studies are beneficial for an initial investigation of a suspected risk factor for a condition. The information obtained from cross-sectional studies then enables researchers to conduct further data analyses to explore any relationships in more depth. A case-control study is a research method where two groups of people are compared – those with the condition (cases) and those without (controls). By looking at their past, researchers try to identify what factors might have contributed to the condition in the ‘case’ group. There is a suspicion that zinc oxide, the white non-absorbent sunscreen traditionally worn by lifeguards is more effective at preventing sunburns that lead to skin cancer than absorbent sunscreen lotions. A case-control study was conducted to investigate if exposure to zinc oxide is a more effective skin cancer prevention measure.

Although controls must be like the cases in many ways, it is possible to over-match. Also, once a matching variable has been selected, it is not possible to analyse it as a risk factor. By definition, a case-control study is always retrospective because it starts with an outcome then traces back to investigate exposures.

Since the OR is greater than 1, the outcome is more likely in those exposed (those who are diagnosed with metabolic syndrome) compared with those who are not exposed (those who do are not diagnosed with metabolic syndrome). However, we will require confidence intervals to comment on further interpretation of the OR (This will be discussed in detail in the biostatistics section).
